minne song
technique : oil on canvas, layering/glazing technique
canvas gallery wrapped, edges painted, ready to hang
"
minne song" should evocate an old miniature : "
minne" means love in old german
two persons are standing here, it might be their wedding, or a front-page for a miniature-book telling their love-story
the inspiration for this painting is coming from two sides :
- the ancient illustrators and their way of painting illuminations, with many details, often using a limited range of colors, so that the whole image remains "even" and has a scale above all these details, suiting to the manuscript their are working for,
- and the many collages seen recently on EBSQ ! I was very happy to discover the joy of artists, their colors and compositions, this brought me a lot of pleasure to try with this kind of keen assembling of shapes, styles, colors, but in my own technique, ie oil !
the point was more than ever to dare "details" after having very intensively worked "grounds"
(wax-looking prepared colors-areas, several coats just for the background-colors)
daring to come back even above very resolute shapes which could have already "made" the picture,
then to re-find a unified "scale" among this multitude
and, as I always try, to avoid the background/foreground aspect, and to "even" the whole image
I go always "improvising", to learn to keep courage and to dare to pursue, even if the painting looks as it were finished...
this painting was a new adventure, and it took more than six weeks to get "minne song" as it is now !
my feeling is to have now more tools in my vocabular,
and to be able to dare even more the next time ! (:-)
