On the winter solstice, the light of the rising sun shines over a hill named Red Mountain across the river Boyne in Newgrange, Ireland. The warm glow of the sun reflects like gold off the walls of an ancient Irish Megalithic tomb built 3200 years BC. A finger of light penetrates, in an exact moment in time, through a tiny window above the entrance, travels 79feet down a narrow tunnel to the inner chamber and lights the darkened buriel room in a blaze of dazzling light. It lasts for a few minutes and dies as the solstice sun rises. I have visited Newgrange many times but never witnessed this amazing event. But I came away humbled and very inspired. This magical place where the elements come together and are celebrated, survives to this day for everyone to experience. The union between man and the gifts of the earth, sun and water is for me very spiritual and my visit to this ancient holy place was an inspiration and a homecoming. My painting depicts in abstract form the union and dance of the elements at Newgrange. The earth of Red Mountain on which the tomb is built, the sun in spirals and swirls as it is depicted on the stones, carved by an artists hand so long ago and the waters of the Boyne river where it nestles , protected. This piece was created in celebration of my Ebsq + status. It was too late to submitt into the ELEMENTAL show but I am happy to be able to enter it into BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!.
