Media:  tempered glass on glass mosaic
Dimensions:  10 3/4" square
Date of Work:  November 2005

I own the Time Life series of books that came out in the 1980's on Mythology. I find inspiration in these books and they have been well loved. Although Mermaids are attributed to luring men to their death with their siren song, they are such lovely creatures. I remember reading "The Little Mermaid" when I was much younger (prior to Disney's animation) and that is the image of mermaids that I keep in my head. What really stuck with me after reading that far too many years ago, is that each step the mermaid takes with her human legs, is like dancing on a razors edge.

This piece was created using special papers, tempered glass, a rounded square glass plate and resin. First, Black Ink papers, as well as other colorful green, blue and purple opaque papers and glitter were adhered to the plate. Next , a resin adhesive was used to affix the tempered glass . The resin makes the plate extremely strong. The piece was then grouted using Polyblend grout with green pigments.

The resulting finish of the plate top appears aquatic, with a lot of movement and light refraction. Semi-precious gems (imperfect but great for my art) and star glass shapes were adhered on top of the tempered glass along with the mermaid.

The mermaid was a Christmas ornament in her former life, but I took her away from that. I didn't think she wanted to hang out in a tree (that's just wrong).

The green stand underneath is only for photo purposes.

Like what you see? I love to make these and would enjoy working for you. Please email me or leave a voice mail messag for more information. 916-802-5238
