I have always been fascinated with the myth of Pegasus. When I was little I used to make my mother drive all over town to find the "Flying Horse Ranch" as there were signs for it EVERYWHERE! (she didnt have the heart to tell me that they were signs for Mobile gas....)
Pegasus was born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa when she was decapitated by Perseus. Pegasus was fond of drinking from the spring of Peirene at Corinth. It was here that the hero Bellerophon, in need of a mount on which to attack the Chimaera, found the steed and tamed it with a golden bridle given him by Athena. Bellaphron decided that he was now equal to the gods, and tried to fly to Mount Olympus. Zeus sent a wasp to sting Pegasus, and Bellaphron was thrown to earth where he was crippled and blinded as a lesson to all others who got uppity!
I painted Pegasus on a river rock, which is ironic actually, a being of the air captured on a piece of the ground!
