Juror's Statement: A woman in a traditional fairy tale find happiness when she
meets and marries the man of her dreams. You'll notice
that as each fairytale unfolds, the female protagonist
participates in the action, but when she snags the man, she
simultaneously loses her ability to act. The perfect man,
after all, has the money, has the house, has the servants -
when the heroine partners with the prince, she becomes
irrelevant! What's left for her but to bear an heir to the
royal throne and be sequestered in a belfry somewhere?!
The three works I responded most strongly in this exhibit
to took this notion, so prevalent in the western canon of
romance, and turned it on its head. Little Red Riding Hood
kicks the wolf's ass and understands that she can tackle
anything that comes her way. The frog princess realizes
that a frog is just a frog and chides herself for being so
naive. And Snow White is a self-empowered
artist-in-the-nude! She has dreams of self-sufficiency and
is totally consumed by her artistic passions.
While the works in this exhibit are all well executed, I
found these three to be most aligned with the prospectus
for the exhibit. Thank you for the opportunity to
participate!
