Dimensions:  30x40x1.5"
Date of Work:  8/2003

I see a sort of tragic beauty behind this piece. The thought of this gorgeous landscape ungulfed in flames, smoke plummes toward the sky. I had this image of coming upon it with fresh eyes, never having seen something so horrible and gazing upon the aurora from the heat and smoke.... This piece had intentions of actually being a representational piece, but it rebelled and I let it be. This piece was created 2 months after my son was born - he would sit in his carrier and watch me work for hours on it, enthralled by the paint and the constant repetition of the palette knife against the surface of the canvas. I think that's another reason I let it be complete chaos, because he liked it that way. Getting representational meant the knife would have slowed down and I wouldn't have been banging it against the canvas like I was to create the stucco appearance seen on the surface...he actually got a bit upset when I would stop. The sound of what to me was chaos actually lulled him to sleep.
