Dead Horse pond is located deep in the woods of Massachusetts

Very small, dark and surrounded in tall pines that dropped a thick carpet of old needles.

It was rare to see anyone out there besides an occasional dog walker or teenagers getting stoned.

Great place in winter to ice skate and I can remember clearly the way the pond would moan and groan, creek and gurgle at us.

The water really did look black in summer and the tales of leeches and snapping turtles meant it was off limits.
