The Long Goddess is one piece in a series of sculptures inspired by neolithic art. In the European neolithic era, the goddess was often portrayed with exagerated hips and no arms or head. With this in mind and with a long symmetrical piece of sandstone on hand, this goddess was developed and then meticulously hand-carved. This is not a copy of a piece of neolithic art, but an original interpretation of the goddess inspired by ancient times. Once the design was finalized, it was drawn onto the stone and then the carving began. Because the stone was an extremely hard sandstone, chisels were sharpened almost daily. Once the shaping was done, then the labor-intensive sanding and polishing began. Normally, I strive for a mirror finish, but with sandstone, this was not possible. The rougher surface seems to add to the neolithic nature of this goddess. The base is also of sandstone and is attached to the sculpture by mechanical means.
