"Ripped Off" from Diana Mae Potts' "Gemlike Flower I" and "Tiny Golden Pheasant" drawings. (Also fondly known as "Hearing Impaired Bird With Ear Trumpet" or "Bird and Horse")
I chose these two tiny drawings of Diana's mostly because I was drawn to the gorgeous colors and felt that I could bring out those colors in my piece as well. I also liked the tiny format, since it lends the drawings just enough detail to get the beauty across without using a billion tiny details that I could never hope to render in magazine bits.
The mosaic is created with 1/2" squares of magazine pages decoupaged onto a canvas panel. I created the layout for the piece in Photoshop Elements, cutting and pasting the characters from the originals into one big image. Then I used the grid feature in Elements to divide the plan into all the individual squares so that I could sift through my stash of paper bits to find the ones that most closely approximated what the image was "supposed" to look like in each square.
