"Ripped Off" from Cary K. Snyder's "Night Owl" and "Purple Monkey." This was my first "rip," and as I looked through Cary's portfolio it struck me as a little boring just to recreate one of her pieces in paper, so I decided it would be more interesting to mix elements of two pieces into one. And the result was midnight in the jungle of cute and playful! The mosaic is created with 1/2" squares of magazine pages decoupaged onto a canvas panel. I created the layout for the piece in Photoshop Elements, cutting and pasting the characters from the originals into one big image. Then I used the grid feature in Elements to divide the plan into all the individual squares so that I could sift through my stash of paper bits to find the ones that most closely approximated what the image was "supposed" to look like in each square.
