Balarama: God of Agriculture

Detail Image

Five of the seven layers

Media:  Collage on Watercolor Paper
Dimensions:  11" x 14"
Date of Work:  7/04

Balarama, the brother of Krishna, is a god of agriculture and is symbolized by the plow and mace.

In this East meets West piece I wanted to explore how Hinduism could be fused with my Midwestern hometown to create a multicultural piece of art. Agriculture is the focus of the piece because of its importance in both cultures. Balarama, as the god of agriculture, becomes an obvious connection between the two and symbolizes the belief we put into religion and nature for a good crop. I also wanted this piece to be reminiscent of Hindu art with its vibrant colors, framing, and perspective.

This piece is seven different layers of digital photography and found images. What the picture to the left doesn’t capture is the vibrancy of the colors and the depth added by seeing the different layers of cut paper.

Resources: A couple books on Hindu religion and Indian culture as well as websites focusing on Indian Art.
