Looking down on suburbia from city heights is like viewing the world from a carousel. Everything around you seems to be spinning into a blur. In this painting I tried to depict the feeling of the fast paced city in contrast to the, apparently, slower moving suburbs. I also wanted to express some of the stereotypes that the city dwellers often place upon suburbia....that it is repetitive and blocky, full of lush green lawns and swimming pools, and the people with money live there, lining the streets with gold. Just like from the carousel, the view of suburbia is a distorted blur.
The colors of the piece were first blocked in, then a sand-paint mixture was applied to the "suburban areas" to provide some texture and aid in the blurring. When the sand dried, I highlighted the texture with dry brushed gold paint. I outlined and detailed the city buildings with irridescent and metallic paints applied with a squirt bottle, which gives them some dimension when dry.
