A Chiefs wife gave birth to four little monsters. The tribe wanted to kill them. They grew large and hurt children, upset tipis and became too large to kill. A man who saw the future was told to put up a tree that would grow very large, to the sky. Then came a flood and they had to take all the animals they could into the tree that rose into the clouds. A Turtle was sent to dig under the monsters and uprooted them from the ground and they toppled over and drowned. Then the parents came down from the tree seeing that the water had subsided. They slept for four nights and then awoke to corn stalks. A voice said, 'This is the holy food. You will live and form a new generation. If you, woman, should plant corn and something else grows, then know that it is the end of the world.' After that they heard no more. (Caddo Folk Tale)
