The Lily Pond at Giverny by Torrie Smiley

Media:  Digital painting from Photograph
Dimensions:  8 x 10 Digital Print
Date of Work:  2009

I am impressed by Torrie's wide range of subjects which run the gamut from still lifes to landscapes/waterscapes with culture, portraits and touches of humor in between.

Torrie Smiley's "Lily Pond at Giverny" and other waterworks caught my eye. They are so Monet like, and because I enjoy impressionistic art, I attempted a rip of her beautiful and soothing waterscape for the Rip Off show.

My original photo of a pond resembled her painting except for the placement of the trees and the clouds in the sky. A tree was borrowed from another photo, and working in both Photoshop and Studio Artist, composited layers were built to achieve the painted look and style seen here. I then digitally overpainted the photo to capture Torrie's style, but not necessarily the color, intentionally saturating the scene in order to balance out with the original photo.

Torrie is a gifted artist and I enjoyed working with her art for the show. We follow similar paths in creating pieces. We photograph and paint from a photo as reference, Torrie with acrylics on canvas, and I digitally.
