Media:  Pearls, Semi-Precious Stones and Clay
Dimensions:  12' by 12'
Date of Work:  2006

This piece is the biggest I have ever made, using my usual technique of inlaying precious and semi-precious stones, pearls, silver and gold onto a clay surface. My intention was to show how many different patterns can be chosen to decorate one's kitchen, bathroom, patio, etc., etc. But then it occurred to me that this time of year is celebrated in many different ways all around the world, because we are all celebrating the death/rebirth of the Sun, its light, warmth and life-giving energy in all of its colors. So, I decided that each pattern represents one particular way of celebrating, be it Christmas, Hanuka, Kwanza or any of the other traditions. The essence of this piece, therefore, conveys the harmony of diversity and its message is one of unity in diversity. We really do need each other, in order to understand how beautiful we all are. In my view, that is why we celebrate.
