My parents came thru' "the great depression". I remember my father telling me about going to where newspapers were printed to get the very first copy on the street in order to beat the other applicants to the job site. They survived, even tho' they didn't necessarily "flourish." We were taught to "use it up, make it do, do without or make it yourself." When I acquired space in a local gallery, because I dearly needed to suppliment my income, I made up these totes from my model sketches from my student days, because I could afford to sell them for very little and thus, widen the circle of people who could "afford me. I am delighted to say it worked! In one of the detail images you can see a sales tag attached. This is the only "tote bag" I received back, unsold, from the gallery owner when she closed her gallery to go into public service. The others all sold, but they were nudes. The materials used were old sequential contour drawings on large pieces of paper, glue and yarn.
