Trashion is our middle name here. With four children, a 'not so big' income, and a desire to teach my kids to find creative solutions and be self-reliant, purchased costumes were a rarity in our home. Either the children handled it on their own, or we collaborated. This particular little number was created by 'moi' for myself and later passed on to my daughters. 2005 is the last year I saw it worn, but it still sits waiting for it's next incarnation. The hat was purchased in 2001. In 2002 I added random pipe cleaners, sequins and bells from our 'thrift store finds box'. The addition of the bells turned out to be such fun. The jingling added authenticity to the whole ensemble. The mask was given to me by a friend who knew how my kids loved to dress up. The shirt was fashioned from oddly shaped strips of various coloured broadcloth left over from sewing and crafts projects. (some were probably from fabric or linen purchased at the thrift shop) All the strips were attached to the ruffled hem section from an old black slip or nighty which we either got at the thrift shop or was given to us. Over a turtleneck and tights or pants, this works perfectly and is quite comfortable and easy to move around in. It looks even better if one has an old, rediculous looking pair of shoes or slippers to wear with it!
