The pitcher plant is a carnivorous seductress. The nectar at the mouth is attractive to insects, but the lip of the pitcher is slipper and waxy. Inside, the nectar thickens to a dangerous soup that drowns the victim. If that isn't enough, little hairs inside the trumpet point downward to prevent the prey from climbing back out. I painted the pitcher plant to represent the nectar-engorged veins, which have an almost animalistic look. I choose poison green, scarlet and cobalt blue, colors to represent the attractive but toxic nature of this plant.
