Constructed from woven gold wire, this lantern was inspired by the intricate and delicate webs spun by spiders. Designed for indoor use, this is a one-off, hand woven design created for the 'Light My Way: Artist Made Lanterns' show. Initially my design lacked a lid and handle, negating its use as a carried and fully enclosed lantern. After a bit of foot stamping (I'm an artist - forgive me!) I relented and designed a lid and a method of carrying the light. I hope that this altered design satisfies the criteria because I have really enjoyed the design and creation process! The light is completely encased by a complex golden twist of wire. The base and lid are reflections of each other, each a spider's web of gold. The lid is fastened with a twisted wire catch. The gentle light casts delicate shadowed webs across the wall. The wire gave the delicate effect I was aiming for, but with strength enough to safely carry the weight of the candle. I was also very wary of using materials that might set alight! The piece is approximately 7cm tall (not counting the handle) and has an 8cm diameter at the top (the widest point).
