The inspiration for this piece is a black and white photograph which I took of my mother.. She was out in back of our house in Wisconsin, scraping the old loose paint off the house to prep for a new coat of paint.

Not willing to wait for spring, she was working in the cold, wearing her babushka headscarf.

d. The colors are my own, as the photograph was black and white..

This piece was started in 1998 and completed in 2005. The medium is acrylic paint and pieces of fabric on canvas. The canvas has grommets added around the edge which can be used for hanging. The actual size of the image is 28 1/2 x 43 1/2.

The "frame" effect is due to the process I used, in which I taped off a border. I liked the results so much that I never actually framed the piece on stretchers.
