Media:  polystyrene and paint
Dimensions:  21" by 14" by 5"
Date of Work:  2007

Polystyrene is better known by its trade name stryrofoam. My art is made out of the stuff they use for packaging around TVs, electronics, etc. The best thing about using styrofoan in art is that it keeps it out of landfills.

This pieces uses examples of different I use with this medium. Lots of contrast between smooth and rough and shiny and mat are represented in this piece. Also this has cleaner or sharper lines by using more hand painting and open space or negative space. To learn more about this medium visit my profile.

Shipping Hanging and Care

Postage is now based on volume not weight. All my pieces weight about a pound even so the bigger the pieces the more it cost to ship. It would be nice if it was still based on weight.

Hanging this is easy because it is so light. There is no need to use anchor bolts, a nail will do. The back of my work has lots of open spaces to use in hanging the piece. I liked the idea that the open spaces allow work to be hung in a lot of different directions. The back is not flat so the length of the nail out the wall allows for more hanging options.

The pieces are fragile because some of the foam is very thin and easy to break. Once on the wall this is not a problem. It looks heavier and stronger than it is. This deception is what I like about this as an art medium. Cleaning is easy. Gently blow off dust with a can of compressed air.
