Etched Glass Ceiling Fixture Shade!

Media:  Mirror mosaic and Mixed Media Metals
Dimensions:  13" X 3 1/2 '
Date of Work:  April 2007

My garden loves this newest addition! I found a funky old brass lamp by the curb last summer and knew I had to turn it into something special for my garden. I"m crazy about anything with a floral motif. Then, during a renovation project, our old flush-mount glass ceiling fixture had to be replaced due to small chip but I just couldn't part with it because I loved the design in the glass and felt there was still some life in the cool piece. It all came together when I found a big ceramic ball nobody wanted due to problems in the glaze. Immediately I thought of my odds and ends at home and pictured a funky Victorian style Gazing Ball! I dropped by my local glass and mirror supplier and told them I'd like to buy mirror destined for the trash. I had a pretty good feeling they'd let me have it for free but what surprised me was how large the piece was that I was given. There is so much waste! (They are now going to keep a box in the back and hold on to broken and useless pieces for my future projects! Thanks Nordel Glass!) Originally I had envisioned grouting the mirrored ball with white but discovered I had just enough DeLorean Grey left over from a tiling project and so I used that up instead of tossing it. I'm not disappointed with the results and feel good about adjusting my artistic vision to better fulfill the prospectus! The base of the lamp stand was left brassy, but I gave the 'stem' of my gazing ball ' dandelion' a Verdigris finish to better blend in with my garden theme. Thanks for looking. I have another different ceiling shade I can't wait to turn into a Tulip! Happy Recycling to us all!
