I did pay a sahmefully small price for the stamps, but i found them in a yard sale where people get rid of their junk! Of course it comes in more than 30000 stamps in that deal, and i sort thru the stamps to find those that are useful for me. I collect old stamps myself, so i added some of my own collection. It will be harder for Westerners to understand this piece of art. In the surface, it is a collage of old USA stamps ranging from late 1800s- around 1950s, look closer you will see all those stamps bear special cancel marks from post office, they are my favourite cancels called Eyes Cancels, some comes with numbers on them and some blank. Looks like American football to me. To look deeper, a Chinese reader will be able to read a chinese character hidden in the art --- SPIRIT/SOUL. That's my big point of my art, in order to find the soul of somebody, one cannot just look from the surface or physical to find their soul. You might to look closer, learn deeper in order to know one's spirit. The whole art is inspired by Mosaic art and those graphic with numbers that test whether one is color blind. Obviously the Chinese character is 'written' in orange stamps, the background i choose multi colored stamps to create the contrast. I use stamps hings to stick them onto a large card-stock, which they can still be removed later without hurting the quality of the stamps. It is a fun project and took lots of time brainstorming and creating. I feel this is a very meaningful project because it promotes the beauty of old stamps that you don't see everyday, and also promotes the message of "Pass the surface appearance. Look deeper and see thru the heart". I made another one using the same idea but used vintage Canadian stamps instead. Check it out as well, that one is easier to understand for all.
