The Drish House was built in 1837. The building has had many lives, from a Doctor's plantation home, to a public school, a garage (The Tuscaloosa Wrecking Company), and finally to the Southside Baptist Church. The landmark is now vacant and on the endangered list of historical buildings in the city. Olympus Camedia C2100 used, then image manipulated via digital imaging software.
Just another ugly old run-down building is how most people seem to see this building. Perhaps its complex history evokes mixed emotions about its worthiness for historical preservation. Other than my attraction from a visual standpoint to the old wooden windows and the Italianate ornamentation now fallen into urban crumble, I am interested in how buildings listed as historical sites can be so easily dismissed by the society they reside in.
