Date of Work:  March 2006

This piece was inspired by my time that I spent living in the Cayman Islands for about eight months. I learned how to scuba dive while I lived there and found the underwater sea life to be facinating. I especially loved the parrot fish that showed all the colors of the rainbow. But, the thing I loved most about the Island was the people! They were beautiful both inside and out and had such a happy inviting and accepting attitude. This mermaid is based off of those colorful fish and colorful people that made my island experience so wonderful. She is sculpted out of a custom mixture of polymer clays over a brass rod and wire armature. She has a brass rod that comes out of the bottom of her tiny wrist that sets into the base so that she appears to float over her coral reef base that is made of polymer clay, sand and shells over a wooden base. Her hair is Tibetain Lambswool and her features are handpainted. Her tail has individually sculpted scales that are handpainted with pearl-ex poders and her tail is made of liquid polymer clay over wire painted with pearl-ex powders and decorated with tiny micro marbles. A true tropical beauty!
