This Week's Theme:   Quilts

quilt(kwilt)
n.
1. A coverlet or blanket made of two layers of fabric with a layer of cotton, wool, feathers, or down in between, all stitched firmly together, usually in a decorative crisscross design.
2. A thick protective cover similar to or suggestive of a quilt.

Quilts, whether tradional, modern, functional or decorative, are a part of the history and heritage of many families in almost every culture. When you consider this and the creativity, artistry, skill and care with which quilts are created, the above definition hardly seems adequate.

Media:  Fibre
Dimensions:  4"x4"
Date of Work:  January 2006

I made this tiny 4" carded quilt by hand cutting and piecing 37 one-half inch hexagons, each with a flower, to make the "recombinant blossom" in the title. Then I machine and hand-quilted the blossom to a carded fabric using invisible thread, metallic and mylar threads, and "popped" the individual flowers by hand tying bright silk and mylar through the centers of the hexagons. I finished with crewel work in silk and cotton for the leaves and stem, and blanket-stitched the edging. The piece was framed and sent to my aunt for her 90th birthday.
