Art of the Day: 06/10/2006
This Week's Theme:   Raku

Raku is a method of firing pottery. Each piece of pottery is fired in a kiln until the piece reaches about 1800 F. The piece is removed, while red hot and placed in a metal can with some sort of combustible material, like paper or sawdust. When this material ignites, the fire and smoke react with the glaze to create unique and unpredictable colors, lusters, and patterns.

Raku pieces are porous and the glazes are very often toxic. They cannot be used for liquids and many foods but they are suitable for any dry item - and of course, Raku pieces are beautiful to look at.

BABY FACE

Media:  CERAMIC AND FIBER
Dimensions:  11" TALL
Date of Work:  2004

Ceramics is mostly about vessels. Vessels to eat out of, drink out of, to carry in and store in, to decorate and to adorn. This piece is traditional in that it is a vase-like container but the decorative object it holds is a baby head which could be taken as a brand new vessel waiting to fill with life. I did a number of containers which had the baby head theme. There were decorative objects, baby head wine glasses, decorative items such as this, the vessel theme is almost unlimited. This piece is created from a molded face piece, a thrown body piece with added clay to embellish then it was finished in raku, and finally fiber and beads were added. This is one of several pieces done along these lines they follow very closely the same kind of things that I do with my collages and drawings. Juxtapostion of unusual images seemingly unrelated yet go together. This piece has a nice relic feel to it as though it was dug up from some strange civilization.
