Art of the Day: 09/07/2004
This Week's Theme:   Summer Landscapes

With the arrival of Labor Day, we begin saying our good-byes to summer. The days will soon be short and the air crisp and cool. Before we turn to Autumn, Art of the Day takes one last look at the landscapes of summer.

Incredible as it may seem, it wasn’t until after I was 40 years young that I had the opportunity to vacation at the beach. Oh, I had seen the ocean, but I never actually spent any time just walking along the shore, watching the sea gulls or just people watching. But most of all, I was just totally overwhelmed by the ocean itself.

This summer we spent our vacation time in Panama City Beach and the beautiful shore there is the theme for this series, “The Emerald Coast”.

The first painting in the series, Sea Grass, depicts the profusion of weeds growing near the shore which seems to be as ageless as the wind that blows constantly through them. Although you can’t paint the glorious sounds of the beach, your memories will bring back the ocean’s timeless sound as the earth breaths in and out, and listen for the rustle of the sea weed as the wind blows inward from the Gulf of Mexico.
