The Debate by Lisa Thornton Whittaker
Lisa Thornton Whittaker

Suddenly, without warning, EBSQ has entered its eighth year. We've gone from a small group of "art rebels" on eBay to a highly-creative global community. We've even developed quite a few traditions along the way. The image you see, at right, is testement to one of them. "The Debate" by Lisa Thornton Whittaker was our member's choice winner for our 2006 Spam & Trout Biennial. And it embodies everything I love about this community. The composition is complex. A lot of wit is in evidence (pun intended!) The whole concept behind this piece just rocks. Every even year, we have this odd little show. It's a little scary since I never know what we're going to get. So many of the in-jokes referenced are over half a decade old. And yet--this show never fails to amaze me with your creativity. Your fearlessness in creating work for this show that they probably never would have created otherwise. Work that might not even be salable (although we know there have been some die-hard Spam & Trout collectors in the past!) Every biennial, you guys embrace the inherent weirdness of this show and just go with it. And I kinda love it.
