Art of the Day: Friday September 24, 2004

- by Charlie Moavero

This week's theme: The Pin-Up

A pin-up is an image that contains elements of a theme or tells some kind of story. The pin-up artist's subjects are women and the Pin-Up Girl has become a classic. Depicted in a provocative manner, these women are occasionally nude but are more often dressed in skimpy, form-revealing clothes. The Pin-Up has grown to include the not only the classic style of Vargas, but also a realistic style favoured by some contemporary artists. The artists of this genre have also begun creating with the tools of the digital age as well as in more traditional media.
