Art of the Day: Monday March 15, 2004

Cave of the Fire God

- by Victor McGhee

This week's theme: Encaustic

Encaustic - "to burn in". Simply put, encaustics are a combination of waxes, pigments and sometimes resin, heated to a liquid. A durable medium, encaustic paintings dating from antiquity are still extant today. Today's encaustic artist has the luxury of electric heating elements and other modern tools, but the magic of encaustic remains unchanged.
