I love Greek myth and I've always felt there is human truth there. But I was rereading the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx and thinking "these days, that whole thing would have gone down differently-- times have changed, and so has our psychology". So in this painting, I imagined going into the Underworld to see Oedipus and the Sphinx-- to see if they were different, and how. Behind Oedipus is Hekate's torch.
