The Eiffel Tower is the outstanding icon of Paris but who was the brain behind it. Gustave Eiffel is the answer and here is my portrait of him.
The border represents the footprint of the tower.
It was built as the entrance arch for the World's Fair in Paris in 1889 and at the time was criticised as an eyesore, lacking in any aesthetics.
The background of the portrait illustrates the armature for the Statue of Liberty which was also the work of Gustave Eiffel.
The work is a photoetching and is my favourite mixture of digital and traditional printmaking tecniques.
