Art: CATFIGHT by Artist Virginia Ann Zuelsdorf
This piece, with its many layers and directions show the motions of my body as I paint, the directions of my brushes, of my knife strokes and even my fingers. It also has a great sense of motion as your mind's eye tries to comprehend the image, traveling into and out of the piece.

In the last few years I have become limited in the way I can use my arms and hands. These limitations have made me change the way I paint. It has become difficult to do detail work, the painting has to be at a certain level relative to my body, and I turn it in all 4 directions while I work on it. I also have brushes taped to sticks, so I can put the painting on the floor and stand over it while painting. When I get frustrated, or start to hurt, my motions become the essence of me as they come out in the art..

The name came about after the painting was done. I stood back, looked at it and saw flying fur, and twisting of bodies in the air. I do like cats and have owned several, but right now my only interaction with them is the noise of their very vocal catfights at night. Thus the inspiration for the name.

I use complementary colors, which make each other stand out and glow, as they compete with eace other.

One thing that I really like about this painting is that in different kinds of light, the yellow in the background prevails, while the green can also prevail under other lighting sources. Either way, I think it works well.
