"As the sun rises, illuminating the sea, a pair of brown pelicans passes by on their ‘first flight’ of the day."
Artist comment: "Observing pelicans is a fascinating pastime. On the Washington Coast at Seaview, I saw a group of them coming in to land on the beach near the surf to preen and rest. Apparently they had finished feeding and settled on a protected sand bar to rest and digest their breakfast. I chose pastel to paint this pair on Canson Mi-Teintes paper. I sketched the birds, then filled in the background sea and sky, concentrating on the colors of the morning light. Finally I detailed the pelicans with careful attention to detail.”
