Art: Raku Leaf II by Artist Deborah Sprague
Raku is a ancient firing process of pottery. The leaf is first formed here in the studio using ceramic clay. It is then bisque fired at 1850 degrees. Once cooled I hand glaze them using specialty glazes I make right here in the studio..they are then refired to 1850 degrees and pulled RED HOT from the kiln with special equiptment. They are placed in the ground with Oregon pine needles to cool. This is what causes the unique color effects. Totally unpredictable and exciting!
