
This piece was shibori dyed in a double spiral fold pattern with various mixes of Procion MX dyes Lapis and Clear Yellow and details were added with thickened Procion MX dye Rose Red, creating the "underpainting" and sinuous compositional structure. I added some black and white transfers of laser printous of some drawings I had done of holly leaves to anchor the foreground elements before painting also.
This winter landscape depicting my Appalachian mountainside backyard featuring the vertical thrust of tulip poplar trees and showcasing the American Holly tree was inspired by an impromptu hike and photo session in the snow. The film was never developed and later lost, so I decided to paint a representation of what I would have liked the photos to develop as.
